Droitwich 36 - Walsall 8

Walsall's first game in this season's RFU Intermediate Cup resulted in a fairly convincing defeat at Droitwich. The hosts are having a successful season, with this being very evident in the confidence they displayed throughout the match.

Walsall made an encouraging start with Hickman, Watkins and Angell making strong, defence breaking runs. This pressure resulted in a penalty for Walsall which Mitch Carless converted from twenty five metres. Two minutes later the hosts scored off their very first piece of possession. Scrum half Walker put full back Penn away on a try scoring run. The hosts continued to display some good running and passing skills. But it was off a lineout that they had their next score when flanker Knight broke through from ten metres. The visitors then had a period of sustained pressure forcing their opponents to commit penalties which resulted, eventually, in a sinbin. The home defence kept their opponents at bay and then gradually gained a position close to the Walsall twenty two metre line. They showed some good quick passing skills which led to winger Yip scoring near the corner flag. Yet again, Walsall retaliated with some powerful plays which saw them encamped close to the Droitwich line for nearly ten minutes. The visitors secured some good set piece possession with lock forward Michael Lockett making a pleasing debut. Once again, the home team transgressed repeatedly and the referee, who showed good control throughout, had no option but to issue another yellow card. Although the Walsall forward drives were stopped, the power of their scrum set up No8 Dickson for a try off the base of the scrum. The first half came to an end when a Droitwich drive resulted in a try for hooker Lippett.

The second half started badly for Walsall as they lost possession in their own half and flanker Middelton ran through for a try. Walsall showed a keenness to run the ball. This resulted in more pressure which resulted in another yellow card for their opponents. During one of these attacks the visitors suffered another injury to their already depleted squad of players. This week it was centre Rob Angell that was forced to leave the field because of a hand injury. Droitwich added a late score when their strong running No8 put scrum half Walker away for a try. Scott-Walker added three conversions for the Worcestershire team, who now progress into the third round of this national competition.
