Walsall 32 - Kidderminster 24

Walsall's first home league game of the season saw them securing a confidence boosting win over a decent Kidderminster outfit. The result was most welcomed, but further long-term injuries to two more of their regular players, was bad news for the management. The current injury crisis saw Nico Watkins, one of Walsall's promising Colts, make his debut for the 1st team at Delves Road. He was selected on the wing, but an injury to player coach Jon Ford saw him move into midfield. He soon showed he was comfortable in this situation with his defensive tackling being particularly effective. But it was ten minutes into the second half that Nico had the chance to display his attacking talents. The visitors had reduced the deficit to 22 - 14 as they set up another attack. The hosts, however, secured possession deep in their own half and the ball was quickly passed out to the Walsall three-quarters. Nico received the ball near his own twenty two metre line. He quickly broke through a gap and outpaced the first line of defence. He then produced some clever footwork in the final fifteen metres to leave two more would be tacklers floundering before scoring the team's bonus point try.

Walsall had made a good start as they retained possession with several promising attacks. This eventually resulted in a successful twenty five metre penalty by Mitch Carless after Rob Angell had breached the Kidder defence. Only ten minutes had been played before the hosts were forced to make their first substitution as hooker Alex Jones was forced to leave the field with, what seemed to be, a serious arm injury. Dan Poston came on to play his first league game since April 2012. Walsall continued to push forward and Angell was involved again ten minutes later. This time he supported flanker Matt James and then burst through the defence before finding Dean Ainger with a good pass. The young winger showed good speed to secure the touchdown near the corner flag. It was the same combination that combined for Walsall's second try. This time Angell broke through after scrummage ball was moved quickly. He again found Ainger in support, but this time the winger produced a couple of neat side-steps before crossing. Carless added a good kick from wide out and into a stiff breeze. The final ten minutes of the half saw plenty more action. Another replacement was used to cover Ford's injury and a Kidderminster attack resulted in lock forward Mike Benson being yellow carded. Extra time at the end of the half saw two more tries being scored. Winger Andy Worrollo made the initial break before JB Lucak made a strong ball carry. When he was stopped, scrum half Jordan Sproule moved the ball quickly. Prop forward Pete Fitzgerald was quick to support and broke tackles before getting the try which Carless again converted. Nearly ten minutes of added time was being played when the visitors had their first score. Scrum half Pinner made a blindside break and put the speedy Morgan away on a try scoring run with Pinner adding the conversion.

The visitors, through Morgan, reduced the deficit with a try and conversion within five minutes of the restart. The home defence stood still as, what seemed, an obvious knock on was ignored by the referee and the visitors were soon away for another try. The Worcestershire team were gaining more confidence in their attacking abilities. But the spectacular try scoring run by teenager Watkins gave the hosts a 29 - 14 advantage. The home defence looked to be working well, but they were being penalised regularly, which gave the visitors some good attacking positions. Eventually the ball was moved wide and Morgan went over for his third try. Carless, however, managed to add to his team's tally with a well struck forty-metre penalty. The game was approaching the final ten minutes when Walsall's prop Pete Fitzgerald was forced off the field with a serious leg injury. Further re-organisation of the team meant more disruption for the Delves Road team and Kidderminster ensured it was a nervous finish to the game, as No8 Smith, powered over from a close-range scrum. This, though, would prove to be the final score of the game.
