A Walsall team, showing six enforced changes from the previous week, put up a battling performance against a strong Leek outfit. Once again, there was a debut for one of Walsall's talented teenagers, with Sam Garbett displaying some good running skills from the full back position.

The hosts started in determined fashion and subjected their visitors to a prolonged period of pressure. Walsall, to their credit, showed real commitment in defence with forwards and backs fully committed to making their tackles. Eventually, half backs McDermott and Drew linked together well before the latter found the space to go over from close range. McDermott then added the conversion to get the first points on the scoreboard. More than a quarter of the game had been played before the visitors managed to gain a position close to the Leek tryline. Woodward took the lineout ball and Luczak and Weaver initiated the drive that saw flanker Hickman get the touchdown. The constant rainfall meant that both teams made errors. But, the fact that there were no further scores during the half, reflected in the effective defence displayed by both teams. The half, however, finished rather earlier than expected with the hosts looking to put Walsall under more pressure.

The second half saw both teams create several scoring opportunities, but a solitary McDermott penalty after twenty minutes was the only other score of the game. Unfortunately, for Walsall, on the occasions that they seemed to have gained a good scoring opportunity the ball was kicked or the passing suffered in the wet conditions. The fact that the visitors held on to gain a losing bonus point was some consolation. However, yet another injury, this time to Alex Woodward, will put more pressure on the already depleted squad of players.
