Walsall 39 - Ludlow 39

This latest league game at Delves Road saw ten tries being scored by two teams who both showed flashes of brilliance. But both teams were also guilty of some woeful defending and decision making. The hosts, who had the advantage of a strong breeze behind them, started strongly. Good breaks were made, but as so often during the game, there was a lack of support at crucial moments. Mitch Carless kicked a penalty and then a Rod Dickson drive resulted in flanker Jamie Hickman going over under the posts. Carless put over the conversion to give his team a 10 – 0 lead after fifteen minutes. The next quarter of the game saw the visitors gain in confidence and were soon on the scoreboard. Wayward Walsall kicks gave the Ludlow backs easy possession which they used very effectively. They had a potent attacker in Will Sparrow and they made every effort to get the ball to the winger whenever possible. He was also Ludlow’s place kicker and he got their first points with a twenty-five-meter penalty. He was then put clear for a fifty meter try scoring run which he also converted. Similar good passing resulted in centre Williams going over near the corner flag. The hosts managed to finish the half with some good periods of possession. They tried to force their way over the Ludlow tryline. But it took some good running and passing skills by fly half Matt Wood and centres Clarke and Lay that saw the latter cut through for a try under the posts with Carless adding the conversion.

The second half started badly for the hosts as they failed to gather the ball which eventually resulted in Sparrow kicking a thirty-meter penalty. Once the home team had their hands on the ball, they showed that they could retain possession for quite long periods and on this particular occasion they had to be content with a Carless penalty. During the next fifteen minutes the visitors seemed to have won the game as they scored three tries during this period. They had their first after No8 Davies made a thirty-meter burst off the base of the scrum. The ball was then moved wide for Williams to cross for his second score. Sparrow then added a superb touchline conversion. It was a Walsall attack that resulted in Ludlow’s next try as a poor, possible try scoring pass, was not gathered. The ball was kicked downfield by full back Doyle and hacked on, the ball bounced kindly into his hands which enabled him to cross for the score with Sparrow adding the conversion. It was a similar scenario four minutes later as Walsall were looking to put in the final try scoring pass deep in Ludlow territory. This time it was Sparrow that intercepted the pass and flew down the wing on a lung bursting seventy-meter journey to make the touchdown, which once again he converted. Therefore, the hosts found themselves trailing by nineteen points with only fifteen minutes left. They eventually had some success from their close support play as No8 Luczak went over wide out. Carless added, what would prove to be a vital conversion. A few minutes later the Delves Road supporters were treated to a superb piece of try scoring play. Hickman took the quick penalty deep in his own half, he then found Sam Garbett in support. The young winger held off defenders on a fifty-meter run. When he was stopped, he found Mike Benson in support. The Walsall lock forward showed good strength and speed as he made the final twenty meters to the tryline. Carless put over the conversion to set up an exciting final eight minutes. Virtually the whole of this time was spent deep in Ludlow territory. They defended valiantly, but conceded penalties and eventually yellow cards. The hosts, however, struggled to capitalise on their numerical advantage and continued to try and force their way through the visitor’s defence. It seemed fairly apparent that a few well-placed passes would have found the gaps. A converted try would have given the home team an, what seemed, unlikely win. They did eventually get their try, but Luczak was driven over near the corner flag and Carless was just off target with this particular conversion
