Walsall 39 Cleobury Mortimer 0

This was Cleobury’s first ever visit to Delves Road. The recently promoted team battled bravely throughout. But they faced a Walsall team that looked determined in attack and defence. The wet, muddy conditions made it a real test for both teams with the hosts always looking to be in control of the game. Although, they pressed for long periods, they did not manage to get their first score until a quarter of the game had been played. It came from a powerful scrum twenty meters out. No8 JB Luczak, made a timely pick up and broke through the visitor’s defence for a well taken try. Rob Angell created their next score within five minutes. The Walsall centre used his strength and speed to make thirty meters before a well-placed kick was gathered by the ever present Matt James. The Walsall flanker shrugged off defenders as he dived over for the score. Full back Roger Weston put over another good conversion. The hosts continued to press forward, but the Worcestershire team defended well and Walsall were restricted to a Weston thirty meter penalty during the next ten minutes. Walsall put together some of their best attacks during the final five minutes of the first half. Players carried the ball well and also linked together well. Dickson,Luczak,Hickman,Benson and James were always at the forefront of the forward charges. Simon Weaver was always involved and it was the prop forward that went over for the next try. This score was quickly followed by a midfield scrum. Mitch Carless found Weston in support and he put winger Sam Garbett away with a well-timed pass. The Walsall teenager outpaced the defence on a forty meter try scoring run. Once again Weston added the testing conversion despite the muddy conditions. This final score of the half secured the hosts a try bonus point and a 29 – 0 lead at the interval. Cleobury were hit by two yellow cards at the start of the second half. But Walsall were not as fluent in their attacks for most of the half and only added a Weston penalty during the first quarter. Errors were inevitable during the latter stages of the game as the greasy ball and the heavy conditions tested every player’s skill level. It was Walsall’s centre Rob Angell that brightened up the final five gloomy minutes. He weaved through the visitor’s defence from thirty meters for a superb score. Full back Weston capped an impressive individual performance with another excellent conversion.
