Kidderminster 21 Walsall 13

Walsall would have been fairly confident on achieving a good result when they made their latest visit to Kidderminster. The Worcestershire team are rooted near the foot of the league table. But the home team performance belied their lowly league position. They played with a great deal of confidence and showed some superb ball retention skills. The hosts also had players, like Mason,Protheroe and Phillips, who were a constant threat with their powerful ball carries. Indeed, it was only a couple of superb try saving tackles that denied Kidder further scores. The rather lethargic approach of the Walsall players was evident at the start of the game. Flanker Matt James took the ball at the kick off, but lacked support as the home team managed to regain possession. They then retained the ball for several phases before No8 Mason crashed over for a score from close range with Pinner adding the conversion. But, in a rather frantic opening five minutes, Walsall levelled the scores within a minute. The ball was spilled at the restart and the visitors were quick in creating some forward momentum. Simon Weaver,Joe Devey and Richard Clarke made good ground before Rod Dickson broke through and ran in a try from thirty meters which Roger Weston converted. The Walsall full back was soon in action again when he pulled off a superb try saving tackle near the Walsall corner flag. Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch Weston was kicking penalties later in the half. He put over two well struck penalties to establish a 13 – 7 interval lead. The first kick was awarded after James and Benson had taken the ball deep into the opponent’s half before it was passed. Centre, Rob Angell made a decisive break, but was high tackled. The referee was rather quick to blow his whistle because any advantage could have resulted in a Walsall try. The offender was sinbinned and Weston added the points. Just before the interval a sweeping Walsall attack instigated by Hickman and supported by Dickson and Benson resulted in the second Weston penalty. Once again, the start of the half saw Walsall make another mistake as they lost possession at the kick off. Scrum half Morgan made a sizzling fifty meter break before a superb covering tackle by Dean Ainger stopped a certain try. The visitors, however, failed to clear the ball and were penalised for not releasing when in possession. Pinner missed the penalty kick, but the visitors conceded possession immediately at the restart when a player was in front of the ball. This gave the opportunity for the hosts to apply early pressure, with their driving and support play proving to be very effective. The Walsall defence tried to repel the attack, and although Mason was stopped, flanker Protheroe made the final try scoring charge with Pinner adding another conversion. An injury to No8 Lucak added to Walsall’s worries. They tried, however, to get back in the game with Nico Watkins and Rob Angell making good runs. But a rather harsh penalty deep in Kidderminster territory resulted in more good forward drives by the hosts with lock forward Phillips getting the final touchdown. Pinner’s conversion proved to be the final score of the afternoon.
