Walsall’s latest game in Midlands One saw them score twenty one points in as many minutes at Delves road last Saturday. They produced some superb rugby during this period and scored three well worked tries which were all converted by outside half Andy Hawkins.
Captain Steve Halbert got the first after a powerful forwards drive. Ten minutes later, winger Andy Turner and full back Paul Naylor were involved in a sweeping attack, which culminated in lock Alex Woodward slicing through to score under the posts. It was not long before the hosts produced a similar attack off a well won lineout ball. This time it was good passing that released speedy winger Tom Emes. Emes had no problems in beating the defence to score close to the posts.
The visitors struck back with two tries in the final ten minutes of the half. Both were scored by hooker Stuart Gibson after some good forward drives. But the referee played six minutes of injury time, during which Hawkins put over a penalty to make it 24 – 14 at the break.
Most of the second period saw the game flow from end to end, and the game was entering the final quarter before there was any further score. The Walsall scrum forced the visitors to concede penalties, some quick thinking by Halbert saw him take a quick tap and beat the Nuns defence to score his second try. Hawkins put over a fine conversion to make it 31 – 14. Soon afterwards the visitor’s full back Adam Jones put over a well struck drop goal to keep the scoreboard ticking over. There was then a spate of scores in the final ten minutes, which included another ‘mysterious’ six minutes of injury time. Hawkins put over another penalty, this was followed by two tries in quick succession for the visitors. The first for scrum half Scott Pitham, the second by winger Sven Brown. Jody Peacock added the conversion to end the game.
