Well over an hour of this match had been played and Walsall had produced one of their best team performance of the season. During the first half they had faced a gale force wind, and had produced a super display taking control of the game for long periods. The hosts had opened the scoring, when winger Gillick squeezed over in the corner after twenty minutes. But outside half Tom Archer, who had already gone close with a penalty, was on target with a thirty meter kick into the teeth of the wind to make it 5 - 3 at the interval.
The visitors then had the perfect start to the second half, when Archer put over a drop goal in the first minute to establish a one point lead. They continued to display a positive approach, and they scored a super try from deep in their own half when Chris Mould and Dan Boulger combined to make the breakthrough. Lock forward Nick Field supported well and took the final pass to score wide out.
Everything seemed to be going to plan for the visitors, and when Archer put over an excellent forty five meter penalty on the hour, the 14 - 5 lead seemed a match winning position. There was only fifteen minutes left to play as the Walmley Road team began their comeback. The situation demanded that they had to run and pass the ball at every opportunity, and during the next nine minutes the Walsall players were slow to react. The hosts took full advantage and scored two tries in quick succession. Centre White made a break to put winger Sproson in for the first, and then it was his fellow centre Watts who broke through for the second. Rowlands put over both conversions to give his team a surprising 19 - 14 advantage. Six minutes later and Tongan Hese Fakatou touchdown after a powerful drive from a lineout to complete the comeback. The conversion made it 26 - 14, and left Walsall dejected and bewildered.
