Walsall gained a second successive victory in Midlands One, and also achieved a home and away win double over Camp Hill. The forwards in particular, carried on with their impressive display that they produced last week. But, despite an abundance of possession the Walsall backs disappointed, and failed to produce a single try scoring attack.
The hosts took the lead when Ian Briggs put over a simple penalty within a minute of the start. Walsall however soon established a position deep in Camp Hill territory, where they created a series of good scoring opportunities. But the cohesion that was evident last week was missing, and lapses of concentration would often allow their opponents to clear to safety. Indeed, after twenty minutes, another Walsall blunder resulted in Briggs putting over his second penalty to make it 6 - 0.
The visitors, by now, were beginning to dominate the lineout and the scrums, and should have really scored at least one try after captain Steve Halbert and winger Andy Turner had made strong runs deep into Camps territory on four occasions! Just on the stroke of half time the visitors took the lead through a penalty try. The home team could not legally stop a powerful Walsall scrum that was moving relentlessly towards their try line. Archer’s conversion made it 6 - 7 at the interval.
The second half followed a very similar pattern with the visitors soon camped in Camp Hill territory. But once again it was the hosts that got the next score when Briggs put over a difficult penalty after twelve minutes of the half to establish a 9 - 7 lead.
But the constant pressure inevitably resulted in the hosts transgressing, and Archer put Walsall back in front with a twenty meter penalty as the game entered the final quarter. The outside half set up another scoring position ten minutes later when he put a well judged kick into the corner. A classic catch and drive from the lineout resulted in flanker Rod Dickson getting the touchdown. The lineout was proving to be a very profitable area for the visitors, and as a result of another good drive the hosts were forced to concede another penalty which Archer converted. This was in the final five minutes of the match, and although Briggs reduced the deficit almost immediately with another penalty, it was the hosts who were pressing for another score at the final whistle.
