Walsall Colts moved smoothly into the semi finals of the Fred Rowley Colts Trophy with 62 unanswered points against Old Halesonians in an evening fixture at Broadway last Thursday. A day of heavy showers meant the game started with a very wet pitch and the early exchanges were scrappy as both sides struggled to hold on to a wet and muddy ball. Strong defence across the pitch and sterling work by the pack at both the breakdown and set piece gave Walsall the chances they needed and they made the most of them, despite the conditions. First half tries from Charlie Wrighton, Max Hughes, John Duckett, Joe Blacker and Steve Paddock with two conversions from Ben Tipson were the left Old Hales reeling 29-0 at half time.
However, as the surface dried out, Walsall moved into top gear and returned a vintage second half performance of free flowing rugby with forwards and backs alike combining across the pitch to put the visitors to the sword. Further scores from Man of the Match Max Hughes (2), John Duckett, Joe Blacker, a fine wingers finish from Joe Brown and conversions from Ben Tipson (2) and Liam Fussell (2) completed the 62-0 victory.
Walsall Colts return to action in the semi final of the trophy this Thursday at Broadway, 7.30 pm.
