Walsall Colts 30 Dudley Kingswinford Colts 13

Walsall’s annual Colts rugby tournament, the Fred Rowley Memorial Trophy, began in 2003. Since then six different clubs have lifted this valuable silverware. Ten years later, and the host club has managed to improve on their two previous final appearances and actually win the trophy. Walsall secured their place in the final after wins over Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield. The current Walsall Colts team deserved their victory over a very strong Dudley Kingswinford team who had already secured the league championship. But the home team produced a very nervous performance in the first half and missed chances meant that they were trailing 5 – 3 at the interval. DK scored an early try after Walsall had failed to clear the ball out of defence. A fine catch and drive giving the visitors the lead. Rob Angell however reduced the deficit with a penalty. But DK’s advantage was restored when Williams added a penalty early in the second half. The Walsall team were monopolising possession and territory but struggled to deliver the final pass at crucial stages. Eventually they started to close the gap when full back Aaron Chew put over a thirty five meter penalty kick. Replacement Ollie Johnson made an immediate contribution as he gathered a loose DK lineout throw and made twenty meters before off-loading to Connor McGuirk. The Walsall captain then found Alex Hawthorn with a fine try scoring pass. The home team pressed home their advantage after their opponents lost a player to the sinbin as a result of an infringement when Walsall were close to getting another score. The hosts were soon on the attack again as Connor Pitt and Rhys Barry ran well before Ben Nodwell went over near the corner flag. The strong running Barry got the next score after Max Hughes had made a decisive break. Chew converted this score and also Hawthorne’s second after he gathered a loose ball. DK battled hard throughout and thoroughly deserved the final score as the impressive Ben Brown cut through for the final touchdown. But the evening belonged to the young Walsall team and there was great celebrations as the players received their awards and as the Walsall captain, Connor McGuirk lifted the trophy.
