Walsall played host to Kidderminster in the first round of the Fred Rowley cup. From the start the atmosphere was tense and both teams played with a determined urgency throughout. Kidderminster were stronger in the scrums but Walsall excelled in the line outs and both teams were evenly matched in terms of possession and territory. The play moved up and down the pitch with pace. It wasn't until 25 minutes into the first half that the first points were won after Walsall's Jordan Lay kicked a penalty. However, Kidderminster replied with an unconverted try. Walsall responded again, following a scrum on the 5 metre line Capt Connor McGuirk broke through to the try line and this was ably converted by Jordan Lay. At half time, Walsall were leading 10-5.

Kidderminster came back hard in the second half with an immediate converted try after the restart. A series of penalty kicks meant that the lead switched from team to team by 1 or 2 points. However, Kidderminster took advantage at the restarts scoring 2 tries in quick succession. Walsall tried to mount a comeback and pressured the Kidderminster line - Walsall's second Row, Connor Fletcher finally scoring after a catch and drive but Walsall had run out of time to score once more.
