WALSALL 24 DRONFIELD 40

Walsall welcomed Dronfield for their first ever visit to Delves Road. The team from Derbyshire have made an impressive start to their season after securing promotion to Midlands Two North. This latest victory sees them at the top of the league after the first two games. Although the visitors secured a bonus point victory, this did not really give a true reflection on the committed performance made by the Walsall team. Injuries had already deprived the hosts of five regular players, including captain Rob Angell. While there were enforced changes to the forwards and the back division.

The Dronfield team soon showed their attacking intentions as a sweeping attack resulted in No8 Ben Martin going over for the first try of the game with captain Jake Steade putting over the first of his five successful conversions. However, the hosts hit back immediately as a lineout drive resulted in Callum Martin getting the touchdown with Adam Nunney adding the conversion. Walsall added to their points tally within a couple more minutes as they ran and passed well with Ben Pitt getting the ball to Luke Chambers, The young left winger crossed for his first try in senior rugby. But at the end of the first quarter the Dronfield team produced a sustained drive from a lineout with scrum half Reynolds securing the final touchdown. Twenty five minutes had been played before the spectators saw the first scrum of the game. This was soon followed by one of the best individual efforts of the match. Walsall’s No8, Max Hughes breaking through the visitor’s defence and then out running the defenders over fifty metres for a try near the corner flag which Nunney converted. Nunney’s conversion gave the hosts a five point lead just before the interval. It was then that the hosts were reduced to fourteen players. The young centre Hansen Christoffersen was adjudged to have made a high tackle and was quickly showed a red card. The remaining few minutes of the half saw the visitors take advantage of their numerical superiority. They retained possession which resulted in winger Longden crossing for a try.

It was a similar pattern of play after the interval. Dronfield looked to build up periods of sustained pressure which eventually saw flanker Rushton scoring their bonus point try. The Walsall team continued to try and push forward. A good break by Nunney saw the hard-working Corbon Clarke-Selby in support. The Walsall hooker showed good speed and strength to score what was also the bonus point try for the hosts. It was then the visitors that finished the strongest, Two late tries by Martin and Addison completed their scoring.
