A TON OF POINTS AT DELVES ROAD

A TON OF POINTS AT DELVES ROAD

Walsall Rugby Club6 Jan - 11:23

Walsall 103 Mellish 14

Walsall produced another try scoring feast at Delves Road, as they scored fifteen tries to completely overwhelm their Nottinghamshire opponents. Although it was a cold afternoon, the spectators were soon treated to some dazzling displays of running rugby. Only two minutes had been played as half backs Joe Coleman and Ben Pitt made good runs and found No8 Adam Nunney in support to break through some desperate tackles for the first try. Nunney then put over the first of his eight conversions in getting the scoreboard into action. Five minutes later, Nunney and Coleman sent Max Brown away to score the first of his five tries. Another sweeping attack saw the ball being moved wide to the other Walsall winger. Hansen Christoffersen showed good speed and evasive skills on his forty metre try scoring run. Walsall’s fourth try came as a result of the ball being passed deep in their own half. It reached Max Brown with still over fifty metres to the tryline. But the Walsall winger was soon clear of the would-be tacklers and was away on another of his characteristic try scoring runs. Midway through the half the visitors showed the potential of their forwards as their No8, Tom Platt, touched down after a powerful drive from a lineout with Max Roberts adding the conversion. Five minutes later, it was a moment to remember for Walsall’s George Hill. The young flanker was making his debut and had already impressed before he supported a free-flowing attack and broke through tackles for his first try for the Walsall team. The final ten minutes of the half saw the hosts score three more tries. Brown made two more strong runs to add two more tries to his tally and Christoffersen made a forty-metre run for his second try. Early in the second half saw another one of Walsall’s young players, Joe Coleman, score his first team try. A fine twenty-five-metre break for a try under the posts. Outside half Ben Pitt took over the kicking duties and proceeded to put over the first of his six successful conversions. The Walsall team were showing even more confidence in setting up attacks from deep in their own half. One of these attacks resulted in Brown crossing for his fifth try and then Nunney cutting through from twenty yards. Another spectacular length of the field attack resulted in Hill scoring his second try. The visitors worked hard in trying to get some consolation scores, they were rewarded as outside half Connor Power crossed for a try which Roberts converted. Brown helped to set up the next Walsall score. He broke out of defence and eventually found Max Hughes in support. The flanker showed good speed over thirty metres to outpace the defence for the touchdown. Another counterattack by the hosts saw them link up well with Pitt showing terrific speed to run in the try from fifty metres. The final try of the game came from another attack from deep, on this occasion it was Luke Chambers that broke away and touched down near the corner flag. Unfortunately the conversion was just wide of the uprights, all the previous sixteen tries had been converted! However, the final Walsall points total would still be their highest score for seven years.
