Vesyans 25 Walsall United 14

Walsall United faced a tough test against a strong Vesyans team at Streetly. The visitors were competitive throughout but the home team proved to be an effective unit and secured the win with two well executed scores late in the game. Walsall had created several scoring opportunities but had failed to take advantage of the situations. Mitch Carless had produced some well-placed positional kicks and young lock forward Matt Craddock had secured some good lineout possession to set up ideal attacking positions. The Walsall forwards looked threatening and put their power too good effect with two well created tries. Andy Fitzgerald scored their first try. The ever industrious flanker drove through the defence from ten meters. Hooker Dan Poston helped to set up the next score as he took the Vesyans ball at a close range scrum, No 8 Carl Robinson was quick to react and ran through the home defence. Mitch Carless converted both tries to make it 15 – 14 at half time. Walsall failed to add to their score during the second half. Winger Jordan Lay and centre Richard Clarke looked capable of making the break through. While flanker Reece Bennett made a favourable impression in his first game for the team. But passes were either dropped or not delivered. This was in contrast to some crisp passing by the hosts that eventually saw them secure a comfortable victory.
