This reserve league cup clash was a good contest between two committed teams. The visitors always seemed to have the edge with their strong running back division being a constant threat. The hosts defended well for long periods. Eventually Burton scored near the corner flag with an excellent conversion adding the extra two points. Walsall came back strongly and a fine Tony Lay break seemed to have got them their first score. He was, however, stopped just short of the try line, but an Andy Hawkins penalty was some consolation. The visitors doubled their score after they capitalised on an error on their own lineout. Good ball carries by Jamie Hickman and Jamie Scott gained good positions for the hosts, but once again their only score was an Andy Hawkins penalty. Burton extended their lead with two penalties. One before, and one just after half time. The game continued to be played at a good pace and it was pleasing to see the return to action of Jeffrey Williamson. The first team regular played his second game since having surgery as a result of an injury at the end of last season. Williamson had already displayed some good evasive running skills and midway through the second half he finished off an attack with a try near the corner flag. This instigated further Walsall pressure, as Jack Crowhurst and Tom Thornley made good breaks. But the hosts were guilty of conceding possession rather too often, and too easily. A counter attack from a wayward kick resulted in the visitors securing their place in the next round of the cup with a try just before the final whistle.
