Walsall United led Bridgnorth 2nds 17 – 15 with just five minutes left to play. However, they failed to clear the ball out defence and were subjected to nonstop pressure from the league champions. They were fully committed to their tackling but failed to keep their opponents at bay and they eventually broke through for the crucial try and maintained their unbeaten record. This gave the Shropshire team a league and cup double.
Three Mitch Carless penalties during the first half kept his team in contact with Bridgnorth, making it 10 – 9 at the interval. Walsall absorbed a great deal of pressure during the first quarter but came back strongly. Indeed, they had chances to add to their score, but failed to press home their advantage. Bridgnorth were the first to score in the second half. But with ten minutes left the Walsall players linked together well. No8 Hal Gozukucuk made another powerful run, Sam Garbett supported well and then found Jordan Lay with a well timed pass. The young winger showed good speed and determination to squeeze over near the corner flag. Carless missed the conversion but four minutes later he gave his team the lead with a well struck thirty-meter penalty. Unfortunately, his team failed to gain and retain possession during the final five minutes and had to be content with the runners up awards.
